AGTA 2015 Conference workshop abstract
Presenter: Robert Ritchie
Workshop title: Positive Psychology in the Geography classroom
Workshop abstract: Recognising the need to develop the 'whole' child, schools are increasingly focused on the 'well-being' of students. The Southport School is one leading the way. Grounded in academic research by the likes of Martin Seligman (on the elements of Positive Psychology and 'flourishing'), Barbara Fredrickson (on Positivity), Daniel Pink (on motivation), and Art Costa (on Habits of Mind), and incorporating profiling of students on multiple intelligences and Myers-Briggs preferences, The Southport School has made significant gains in promoting student well-being, building strong student-teacher relationships, and enhancing academic outcomes. Seligman's five elements of well-being - Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment - are guiding teachers' efforts in the classroom. This workshop is presented by the Head of Humanities at The Southport School, who is also an active member of the School's Positive Psychology Research & Implementation Group, and the School's Mentoring Committee. With a decade of experience teaching Years 10 - 12 Geography students at this school, Rob offers insights on how to optimise learning in YOUR Geography classroom and, more generally, in your school. This workshop offers highly practical advice from a highly experienced geographer.
All conference registrations and payments are being handled by Group Events.
