Presenter: Malcolm McInerney

Workshop title: Profiling the ‘Spatial Technology Friendly’ teacher

Workshop abstract: Are there some commonalities amongst the teachers who have been the early adopters with the use of spatial technology when using the Australian Curriculum: Geography? Research shows that teacher uptake is certainly not based on age, socio-economic status of the student group, educational qualifications of the teacher, wealth of the school or other factors which are often identified as reasons for the embracing of various educational practices. This presentation presents a profile of a 'Spatial Technology friendly' teacher, a profile which should guide the professional learning, resources and approaches required to engage teachers to embark along the spatial technology learning curve when using Australian Curriculum: Geography in the classroom. The approach to involve teachers in the use of spatial technology needs to be strategic and targeted. Considering that the use of spatial technology has an important place in the Inquiry and Skills strand of the Australian Curriculum: Geography, creating the profile of the spatial technology friendly teacher should be part of that strategy.
