National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition

The Competition is an initiative of AGTA and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland (RGSQ) and is proudly sponsored by National Geographic Channel.

High-scoring students are announced in early May and the results distributed to schools at the end of May. Australia’s team to the next National Geographic World Championship is chosen from this Final. Our team to the International Geography Olympiad is selected from high-scoring students in the Competition’s senior division.

International Geography Olympiad

AGTA and RGSQ organised the 2006 Olympiad from 28 June to 3 July in Brisbane. Countries that took part included Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Taiwan and United Kingdom.

Sponsorship was received from the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training and the Queensland Department of Education and the Arts, as well as a grant from the Ken Sutton Trust. Various organisations, including Hema Maps, Steve Parish, Geoscience Australia, Macmillan and World Wide Maps donated books and other products as prizes.

The Olympiad tests comprised three parts: a stimulus-based written response test, a multimedia quiz and a fieldwork exercise. The latter is being prepared by GTAQ Councillor Russell Smerdon for review by an international committee.

The Olympiad programme gave the students a chance to explore Southeast Queensland with excursions including a guided walk in rainforest, a visit to a wildlife reserve, a beach BBQ and an AFL game. Following the Olympiad there was an optional fieldtrip to the rural areas to the west of Brisbane, including a visit to the Cubbie cotton property and the bilby captive breeding programme in Charleville.
